FAO PROJECT: "URBAN AND PERIURBAN AGRICULTURE: TOWARDS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF LOW-INCOME PRODUCERS’ ORGANIZATIONS”
FAO initiated in 2005 a Project with the support from IDRC in the following cities: Accra, Cairo, Dakar, Harare, Kinshasa and Nairobi in Africa; Phnom Penh and Hyderabad in Asia; Caracas in Latin America.
The aim of the project is to better understand types and performance of formal and informal (peri) urban producers’ organizations, with a view to strengthen these and ensure effectiveness and sustainability.
The project will look at assessing impacts in forestry, crop production, livestock, and will pay specific attention to access to resources, inputs, services, markets and policies.
The project will develop city case studies targeted at the following aspects: origins of the organization, structure and functioning, effectiveness, outcomes, behavioral changes and impacts on members. It will outline recommendations for future action-oriented research. Guidelines for the formation and organization of sustainable producer interest groups in the UPA sector will be proposed.
